Support Japanese for knowledge bases Merged

watsonx orchestrate supports Japanese in its UI and provides features that are easy for business users to use.
However, the knowledge base does not support Japanese.

Japanese support can be considered to have two stages.

1. Enable document uploads via the GUI
2. Create a knowledge base using an ADK with specified embedding model that supports Japanese

Currently, the first option does not work with Japanese because the default EmbeddingModel does not support Japanese.

The second option is understood to work, but it is not officially supported as a product feature.

The ability to upload documents via the UI is an attractive feature for business users, so we request that it be supported

    Hi team- we don't currently have the staffing to formally support Japanese. It's possible that there are models that may work but we have not formally tested this.


    Additionally, our confidence scores / citations algorithms wont work well for Japanese out of the box, and would likely need more changes even if there was a model that worked. If there are specific customers/deals tied to this request, that will help us to request more staffing for the work in the future.
