GRID-PATH — Interconnection readiness agent for large loads

GRID-PATH — Interconnection readiness agent for large loads

Problem: More than 2,600 GW of interconnection requests sit in U.S. queues — over double the country's installed generation capacity — and connecting a data center takes nearly five years on average, versus 18–24 months to build one. FERC's June 18, 2026 Section 206 orders now compel regional grid operators to justify their pricing structures within 60 days and file 30-day reliability reports: speed is no longer nice to have, it is regulatory. Queue throughput is throttled by incomplete applications and late-discovered study gaps, both automatable checks.

Idea: Add a watsonx Orchestrate agent that pre-validates interconnection applications against each RTO's specific requirements, checks application completeness before submission, drafts impact-study evidence from load-behavior models, tracks queue position and study milestones with proactive alerts, and flags cost-allocation triggers early so developers and utilities resolve them before they become disputes. The agent never files on the developer's behalf without explicit human authorization for each filing.

Value: Queue throughput rises without lowering interconnection standards, developers get predictable timelines for siting decisions, and utilities stay ahead of FERC's 60-day and 30-day clocks with applications that arrive complete instead of cycling through deficiency notices.
